He Deceived Me So I Destroyed His Family’s Legacy Chapter 31
He was silent for a long time.
“I just wanted to settle everything.”
“You were my wife. Vanessa needed a position. Julian was my brother, and I promised my mother I’d protect him.”
“I thought if the strongest one made the sacrifice, everything would work out.”
I looked at him.
“So you chose me.”
He closed his eyes.
“Because I thought you would never leave.”
That sentence was more honest than all the grand explanations that came before it.
It wasn’t that he didn’t know what pain was.
He just assumed I would keep enduring it.
“Now I have.”
Adrian opened his eyes, and they were red-rimmed.
“Nora, I love you.”
I wasn’t surprised.
His love always came too late.
Only after I lost the child, after Lily was broken, after the doors closed and the handcuffs locked around his wrists, would he finally say it.
“But I don’t love you anymore.”
I set the phone back in its cradle.
He shot to his feet.
“Nora!”
“When you fell in the mud as a child, I was the one who pulled you out.”
“When the Hale family went bankrupt, I was the one who came for you.”
I paused.
“I washed that handkerchief and returned it to you.”
“As for the money the Hales owed the Blackwoods, the bankruptcy court has already settled our debts.”
“We owe you nothing.”
The door opened behind me.
From the other side of the glass, Adrian kept calling my name.
I never looked back.
That evening, he signed the divorce papers.
