He Replaced His Wife And Lost His Mafia Empire Chapter 19
A month later, Dominic finally agreed to meet at a neutral club.
Miles went with me to Chicago.
Most of the feeling had returned to my hands, but my toes were still numb. Before I entered the building, my mother wrapped my scarf carefully around my neck and asked more than once to make sure I wouldn’t be outside long.
Dominic had grown noticeably thinner.
He wasn’t wearing one of his usual perfectly pressed suits, just a dark coat. His waist was empty, and the boss’s signet ring was gone from his hand.
The moment he saw me, he stood.
“How are your injuries?”
“The lawyer has the medical report.”
I took my seat beside Miles and pushed both the divorce agreement and the revocation of authority statement toward him.
Dominic didn’t touch the pen.
“If the Costa family stops pressing this, we can still save two of the businesses.”
“Once you sign, Miles will stop all active acquisitions, and he won’t apply to start a blood feud against the Moretti family.”
“And the internal review that’s already underway?”
“That has nothing to do with me.”
At last, he understood: I was not going to cover up those problems for the Moretti family again.
Dominic stared at the last page of the agreement.
“Evelyn, is there really no chance for us?”
“No.”
“I’ve already lost my position as boss, and I’m done with Sloane. The necklace, the Lake Geneva house, everything you care about—it can all be yours.”
“Those were never the reason I stayed.”
The last trace of hope in his eyes died.
Just as Dominic picked up the pen, the meeting room door was pushed open.
Sloane walked in, the curve of her pregnancy visible beneath her clothes, and slapped a medical report down on the table.
“You can’t sign.”
Dominic froze.
Sloane looked at me with a smile that was both exhausted and defiant.
“I’m pregnant with his child.”
At a time when the Moretti family had not yet secured its next heir, that child was more than proof of an affair.
If the bloodline records recognized him, Sloane would have grounds to demand continued protection from the family.
Miles stood, moving to block her from me.
I wasn’t angry.
This was no longer another woman trying to steal my place.
I had left that chair a long time ago.
