He Scorned My Love Now He Watches My Rise Chapter 07

When I landed, it was afternoon in the Red Sand territory.

The company car was already waiting.

A coworker helped load my luggage into the trunk and smiled at me. “Long flight. You must be exhausted.”

“I’m okay.”

“The director said you turned down two overseas postings before. Why the sudden change of heart?”

I looked out the window.

Everything was unfamiliar, the wind thick with hot sand. But on the project roster, my name stood alone, followed only by my job title.

“The thing I couldn’t let go of is gone. So I finally came to my senses.”

On the way to the project site, my new phone rang.

The caller ID was from Gray Harbor.

Assuming it was the courier company, I picked up.

The line was quiet.

A few seconds later, Colton spoke.

“You made it.”

“I did.”

“When are you coming back?”

I almost laughed.

He still didn’t ask if I was okay. Didn’t ask if the trip went smoothly.

He still believed I would be back, sooner or later.

“The contract is clear. Three years.”

“Don’t hide behind the contract. If you want something, just say it.”

“Is there some expense you think I missed?”

His breathing turned heavy.

“I’m not calling to settle accounts.”

“That’s all there is between us now.”

I opened my banking app and transferred him my share of the apartment utilities for the final month.

“I lived there for twelve days this month. I’ve sent my portion. I already returned the keys and the access card. Don’t contact me again.”

“You’re just leaving like this?”

At last, a crack appeared in his voice.

“Colton, you were the one who told me to stop acting.”

“Now I’ve stopped. Is it that you can’t get used to it?”
