He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 17

“What I wanted was never for you to clear my name afterward,” Maya said. “I just wanted my fiancé to stand on my side while I was being humiliated. And you didn’t.”

Grant’s eyes reddened. “Give me one more chance.”

“No.”

She answered without the slightest hesitation.

Grant looked as if he had been nailed to the spot. After a long silence, he asked in a hoarse voice, “You really don’t love me at all anymore?”

Maya nodded.

“I did. That’s why I endured it for four years. But not anymore.”

In the distance, a colleague pushed open the glass doors and called to her, “Maya, the meeting’s starting again.”

She turned to go. Grant instinctively reached for her hand, but the moment his fingers brushed her skin, he slowly let go.

“I’ll wait for you,” he said. “However long it takes.”

“Do whatever you want.”

“You’re really never coming back, are you?”

Maya didn’t answer. She walked straight toward the people waiting for her. The glass doors closed behind her, shutting out the last of Grant’s illusions.

He stayed in Chicago for a week.

Every day, he stood on the street far below her apartment building and watched her leave, but he never approached her again.

A year later, while traveling for work, Grant ran into Celeste at the entrance of a restaurant where she was working as the hostess.

She wore an ill-fitting uniform, and the moment she saw him, her eyes reddened.

“Everyone’s freezing me out. No one will help me get a job. Even my old friends avoid me.”
