He Tested Me With Prenup I Left Him With Regret Chapter 18
She grabbed at Grant’s sleeve. “For my sister’s sake, please, help me.”
Grant pulled his arm free, his expression cold.
“Aren’t you the one who always looked down on people who depended on others?”
Then he stepped past her and went into the restaurant.
Not long after, Celeste left Charleston. No one heard from her again.
Two years later, Maya earned her master’s degree with honors and accepted a position at the Chicago History Museum.
On the day of her graduation, a courier delivered an envelope to her.
Inside was a cashier’s check for $243,187.20.
Ten times the original amount.
The note attached to it contained only one line:
“This money never should have been yours to pay.”
Maya looked at it for a few seconds, picked up a pen, signed the back of the check, then took a black marker and wrote VOID across the front in huge letters.
“Please return it exactly as is.”
She handed the envelope back to the courier without adding any other message.
A few weeks later, she moved into a new apartment.
While sorting through old things, she found a box stuffed with letters. Every one had come from Charleston, and every sender line read the same name: Grant. The earliest was already yellowing at the edges. The most recent had been mailed three days ago.
Maya didn’t open them.
She carried the box downstairs and set it beside the blue recycling bin.
The top letter slipped out.
The postmark from three days ago landed right across Grant’s name.
Two years earlier, her lawyer had informed him clearly that he was not to contact her through any channel.
Maya bent down and picked up the letter without opening it.
Then she lifted the whole box back out, called her lawyer, and said,
“I want to file for a restraining order.”
She looked at the letters that had never received a response and had never stopped coming.
“All of these will be evidence.”
