His Jealousy Sent Me Straight To The Ivy League Chapter 14
On the third day after I filed the report, the Common App system logs came through.
The officer called me.
“Inez, the logs show that on January fifteenth at 11:41 p.m., a device that was not your usual one logged into your application portal. That device performed three deletion actions and three addition actions. Also, between 11:38 and 11:44, your two-factor verification was requested five times.”
“Can you trace the device?”
“We’re comparing the IP and device fingerprint now. Can you come in tomorrow to add a supplementary statement?”
“Yes.”
After I hung up, I sat at my desk, looking out the window.
Then my phone lit up again.
Conrad.
“Inez, haven’t seen you in days. You okay?”
A second message followed right behind it.
“Talia asked me to ask if you want to go to the beach this summer. She says she wants to make you a shell picture frame by hand as a graduation gift.”
I turned my phone facedown on the desk and didn’t answer.
On the fourth day, Mallory called with news.
Talia had gone through rolling admission and gotten into an in-state school.
Not the one in the South.
Not the college she had wanted most.
“Her scores were just average,” Mallory said. “In the end, that was the only option she had left.”
I made a soft sound of acknowledgment.
Everything Conrad had done for her had changed nothing.
Talia still didn’t get to go where she wanted.
And I, because of his actions, had gotten into Princeton.
On the fifth day, the police called again.
“The device comparison results are back.”
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“It matches Conrad DeLuca’s phone. We’re opening a case under suspected violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. You’ll need to come in and sign the confirmation.”
“Okay.”
