His Jealousy Sent Me Straight To The Ivy League Chapter 15
It was noon when I went in to sign the papers.
As I came out of the police station, I stood at the crosswalk, waiting for the light.
My phone rang.
Conrad.
I answered.
“Inez.” His voice was low. “The police just came to my house.”
I didn’t say anything.
“They said someone filed a report, said I changed their college applications.” He paused. “Inez, was that you?”
The light turned green.
I crossed the street with the flow of pedestrians.
“It was.”
The line went silent for so long I thought he might have hung up.
Then he asked, “Why?”
I stopped walking.
“Are you asking why I called the police, or why I didn’t help you cover it up?”
He said nothing.
“Conrad, did you think that just because I almost never said no to you before, I wouldn’t say no this time, either?”
His breathing turned ragged on the other end.
“Inez, that’s not what I meant—”
“You said that if I saw the message on the anonymous page, I’d still have a chance to go south with you. If I didn’t see it, then I was just unlucky.”
The other end went dead silent.
Two seconds later, his voice was completely different.
“How do you know about that…?”
“Because I run the Confessions page. I’m the admin. The person you came to that night was me.”
This silence was even longer.
Then the call disconnected.
He had hung up.
