His Number Changed So I Changed My Life Chapter 07

“Lottie.”

Parker was frantic. He shook his head, saying “no” several times, unable to form a complete sentence.

“I’m not getting a divorce. Just… just let me explain, okay?”

I opened the car door and got out, standing in front of him.

“Fine. Explain.”

“Explain why you lied about work. Explain why you’re in her car.”

“And explain yesterday. Who were you with? What did you do?”

I held his gaze, refusing to look away.

He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

He reached out and grabbed my wrist, trying to pull me toward his car.

“Lottie, let’s go home and talk, please?”

We were no longer in the thick of downtown, but cars still passed by. He kept scanning the street, terrified of being recognized.

His grip was tight. I tried to pull away, but he held fast.

Austin got out of the car and stepped between us.

“Let her go,” he said, his voice clipped. “She said no. You keep grabbing her like that, and it’s assault.”

“Austin Westbrook.”

The moment Parker recognized him, his expression curdled.

“Why is Charlotte in your car?”

He still remembered that Austin had pursued me.

Madison walked over from her own car.

“Charlotte, you left a divorce lawyer’s office and immediately got into a car with a man who used to be in love with you,” she said softly. “Maybe Parker isn’t the only one who needs to explain himself.”

She straightened her posture, then took a tiny step back, as if she were afraid of me but had no choice but to speak the truth.

Parker’s eyes immediately filled with suspicion.

I wrenched my hand free.

“Don’t assume everyone is a liar just because you are.”

“We ran into each other at the same law firm,” Austin said flatly. “I was giving her a ride home. That’s it.”
