I Died In His Arms Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 23

The next morning, word came from the Royal Castle that Queen Evelyn was showing signs of waking.

I immediately went to the Castle for questioning, but also because I wanted to confirm her condition for myself.

Queen Evelyn didn’t take her anger out on me. Instead, she had me stay in a guest room at the Castle for a few days.

She was worried the real culprit might try to use me again, and she also wanted to shield me from the media.

In the end, I couldn’t help but ask, “We were never close before. Why have you kept protecting me?”

Queen Evelyn was silent for a long time.

“It has to do with your mother. Do you want to know?”

My mind went blank, but I still nodded.

“Helena did not die of an ordinary illness. Everything she did at the end was for my daughter, Princess Isabelle.”

I froze.

Every public record stated that Princess Isabelle had died at eighteen in a fire at the Westmoor Pack medical center.

Queen Evelyn said softly, “At sixteen, Isabelle married the heir of Westmoor Pack. That marriage was meant to stabilize the western border.”

“But her husband abused her. He allowed his lover to control her treatment and communication. She lost a child.”

“I was only allowed to see her once a year. Every time I saw her, she was thinner than the last.”

Queen Evelyn’s voice caught.

“I begged Roland to end the alliance and bring my daughter home. But he believed the border couldn’t withstand a break between the two Packs at that time.”

“I didn’t care about the bigger picture. I only wanted to save my daughter.”

“When I was in despair, Helena found me. She designed a way out.”

Princess Isabelle was publicly declared to have contracted a highly contagious illness, and all visits were suspended.

The royal family secretly moved her, then staged a fire with no casualties in an abandoned medical building.

By then, my mother was already terminally ill.

After she died, her body was placed in the sealed hospital ward and ultimately buried in the royal mausoleum under Princess Isabelle’s name. The real Isabelle was given a new identity and sent overseas to a friendly Pack.

With difficulty, I asked, “The person buried in the royal mausoleum… is actually my mother?”

Queen Evelyn nodded.

“She said she didn’t have much time left anyway. To be buried as a member of the royal family was an honor she had never expected.”

“The only thing she couldn’t stop worrying about was you. You were still so young. She asked me to protect you until you were grown and to choose a trustworthy husband for you.”

No wonder my father and stepmother, though cold, had never truly abused me or dared to touch the assets my mother left behind.

How ridiculous.

I had become twisted and paranoid because of my mother.

And I had grown up safely because of her, too.
