I Died In His Arms Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 24

When I got home, I went into the memorial room my father kept for my mother.

Her body wasn’t here. There was only a photograph and an empty memorial box on the shelf.

The wall lamp glowed quietly.

In the photograph, my mother was still young, her gaze fixed on me as tightly as ever.

I took the frame down.

I had so much I wanted to say.

Words full of resentment, cruelty, and grievance.

Why?

Why did you do this to me?

Why did you make loving you hurt so much, and hating you feel so guilty?

Something clogged my chest. I couldn’t cry, couldn’t speak. All I could do was struggle for breath.

The door suddenly opened.

Callum had clearly rushed over. His breathing was uneven as he came straight to me and pulled me tightly into his arms.

“Who taught you that when you’ve been wronged, you should hide away where no one can even see you cry?”

He brushed a hand over my face and sighed softly.

“Laurel, don’t hold it in. Just cry, all right?”

I clenched my teeth, trembling all over.

He didn’t press me. He simply held my hand and stayed quietly with me.

After a long time, I finally spoke.

“Callum, I’m not a good person.”

“I used to chase Dominic relentlessly. And just a few months ago, I was still causing all those misunderstandings with Adrian.”

“I know.”

“So you still shouldn’t marry me.”

Callum gently squeezed my fingers.

“Are you trying to push me away?”

“But I can’t bear to leave you alone.”

At last, I broke down crying.

“Then what am I supposed to do? I’m afraid that one day you’ll hate me, too, like everyone else did, and in the end I’ll be alone again.”

Callum wiped away my tears and said seriously, “Other people are not me.”

“I’m pitiful, too. I waited years for that little girl, watched her become someone else, and just hoped she would turn around and look at me once.”

“So stop trying to drive me away, all right?”

I cried as I asked, “What about me is worth all this?”

“I don’t have a single good quality. I only know how to live the way my mother taught me. I don’t even know what food I like.”

“Then I’ll help you find out.”

Callum cupped my face.

“Life is long. We’ll find out together.”

“I want you to see the moon every night, to see the changing seasons, the fallen leaves and flowers, the rain on the southern coast and the sands of the northern wasteland.”

“When that day comes, you’ll understand how big the world is. The love and hate that once trapped you will feel like just one short stretch of your life.”
