I Died In His Arms Now I’ll Marry Another Chapter 25

Callum said he would help me find the things I liked, and he took it seriously.

Every day, he brought me different foods to taste, one by one.

He would stand in line outside a shop on that less-than-perfect leg to buy me little trinkets that had just gone on sale.

He would bend to pick up beautiful fallen leaves he happened to notice, and he would tilt his head back to find the prettiest blossom in a tree for me.

So this was how careful a person could be when they loved someone.

Bit by bit, I sank into the love he gave me, and I began to believe he really was different from everyone else.

But another kind of fear began to grow in me.

I asked him, “What if one day you die?”

The moment I imagined being left alone in the world again, I started shaking uncontrollably.

Sensing something was wrong, Callum lifted me into his lap and wrapped his arms fully around me.

Only after my breathing slowly steadied did he say in a low voice, “Compared to never seeing you again, what I fear more is you believing that living is more painful than dying.”

“If you thought that, then I would feel I’d failed to truly make you understand that you deserve a whole life.”

I hadn’t expected that answer.

Callum tipped up my chin and smoothed away my unease with his kisses.

His kisses were never hurried.

When they ended, he would touch his nose lightly to mine, soothing me.

“Laurel, if that day ever comes, you have to live well for me first.”

“And if sometimes it truly hurts, don’t blame yourself for being weak. Just remember to give the people who love you a chance to find you.”

I buried my face in his chest.

“Callum, take me away from the capital, all right?”

He never refused me anything.

We made a promise that once Queen Evelyn’s case was solved, we would go first to the southern coast, then to the northern wasteland.
