I Married His Enemy The Day He Married His Mistress Chapter 09

The Trade

The next day, Adrian called again.

I didn’t pick up. He kept calling. I blocked him.

Then the messages started flooding in, one after another:

“Sienna, pick up the phone! Where did you take the Locke soldiers?! I still have the ring and the Books, how dare they disobey me!”

I didn’t respond. Leo was awake. Time for breakfast.

We were halfway through eating when gunshots erupted outside.

Lucian came in from the courtyard, expression a few degrees colder.

I stood up with Leo in my arms. He kept his voice low. “It’s fine. Take care of Leo.”

He turned to leave with his men. Halfway to the door, he stopped and looked back at me.

“This time, you want me to go easy on him? Don’t come crying later about how I tore apart two star-crossed lovers for eternity.”

So Adrian had come again.

But without the Locke soldiers, he was nothing. He barely had enough men to cause a scratch. He was walking into his own grave.

I frowned. “Did I marry you for show?”

He grinned. “Got it. Wait for me.”

I stood in the doorway with Leo, watching Lucian’s back disappear into the morning light.

Soon the gunfire grew louder. Denser.

I covered Leo’s ears. He squirmed in my arms, his small voice tight with worry. “Mama, did Uncle Lucian go fight the bad guys? Is he coming back?”

I patted his back gently. “Of course he will.”

But my chest was wound tight.

Lucian was reckless by nature. Bullets don’t care how many men you have. Accidents happen.

The gunfire lasted a long while before it finally died down.

Then footsteps. Chaotic, rushing. I instinctively stepped back.

The door burst open. One of Lucian’s soldiers.

“Madam, Adrian Shaw escaped.”

Something felt off. “Where’s your Boss? Why isn’t he back?”

Before the soldier could answer, a low voice came from the doorway. “Already worrying about me first thing. Looks like my wife really does love me.”

Typical. Never serious for a single second.

I saw him standing there, unharmed, and the knot in my chest finally loosened.

But before I could say anything, he stepped forward and pulled me into his arms.

His voice was rough. “Sienna, you’ve been blind for too long. Finally, you see me.”

I froze. My heart stuttered. I didn’t know what to say.

He was so sincere it made me feel guilty.

All those years fighting him. I never imagined we’d end up here. Husband and wife.

He smelled like smoke and gunpowder, but somehow, for the first time in years, I felt safe.

Leo poked his little head out from between us, blinking up with wide eyes. “Mama, is Uncle Lucian going to be my new daddy?”

I looked down and smiled. Said nothing.
