I Married His Enemy The Day He Married His Mistress Chapter 10

The Last Bullet

Adrian ran. Took some men with him when he left.

Lucian sat at the table, flipping a small knife between his fingers, his tone flat. “He won’t get far. Sooner or later, there’ll be a reckoning.”

I looked at that calm, certain expression of his, but unease still lingered. Adrian escaping meant he’d be back. He never gave up easily.

He took Vivienne with him when he ran. Went crawling to remnant forces for shelter. But those people played by no rules. They demanded a tribute. A show of loyalty. Adrian, to save his own skin, handed Vivienne over to them.

When I heard, I was genuinely surprised. He loved her so much. Bled for her. Pointed a gun at me for her. And he gave her up that easily.

It proved what I always should have known. The person Adrian loved most was always himself. His ambition. His survival. Everything else was expendable.

I told Lucian. He didn’t look surprised.

He leaned back in his chair, tossing the knife lightly, catching it without looking. “Men like that don’t love anyone. They collect people. The second someone stops being useful, they get traded in.” He glanced at me. “You were useful to him for a long time. That’s not the same thing as being loved.”

I sat down across from him. “I know that now.”

He studied my face for a moment. Then he smiled, slow and quiet. “Good. Then stop thinking about him.”

“I’m not thinking about him.”

“Your brow’s been creased for ten minutes.” He reached across the table and pressed his thumb lightly between my eyebrows. “There. That’s better.”

I swatted his hand away. He laughed.

…

One month later, Adrian proved me right.

He came back. This time with everything he had left. Remnants, mercenaries, desperate men with nothing to lose. They came for us like animals with their backs against the wall.

Lucian stood by the window, expression cold as steel, the blade in his hand catching the light.

I walked up and took his hand. “He really doesn’t know when to stop.”

He glanced at me. Something soft flickered in his eyes before it was swallowed by killing intent. “No, he doesn’t. Time to end this.”

The gunfire outside erupted like thunder.

This battle was worse than the last. Far worse. Smoke choked the air. The sound of bullets was deafening, relentless. It lasted a full day. Both sides bled. Both sides lost men.

In the end, Adrian lost.

When I got the news, I went to the scene.

Adrian lay in a pool of his own blood. Eyes unfocused. Lips barely moving. “Sienna… wait for me…”

I walked closer. Heard it clearly now. He was saying my name. Over and over.

For a moment, something stirred in me. Something close to pity.

I looked down at where the bullet had hit. His chest. Right over the heart. The same spot where he’d taken a bullet for me, years ago.

I wondered if he’d survive this time. If he was still that lucky.

Lucian walked up beside me. His voice was quiet. “Want to save him?”

I shook my head. My voice came out barely above a breath.

“No.”

Adrian Locke, no, Adrian Shaw. Obsessed until the end. Every step he took led him here. Every lie, every betrayal, every bullet he put into people who loved him. This was his fate.

I turned and walked away. Didn’t look back.

Lucian’s arm settled around my shoulders, steady and warm, guiding me away from the smoke and the blood.

This war was over.

And my life with Leo was ready to begin again.

END.
