I pulled my sleeve back.
“The ceremony is over. Most of the guests have gone. You’re late.”
His face turned whiter than the blood loss alone could explain.
“When the car hit the wall… I remembered. I remembered everything.”
His voice trembled.
“I’m sorry. I should have come back sooner.”
I smiled faintly.
“Even if you had, you might not have gotten in. Your name was never on the guest list.”
He stood there for a long moment, as if he didn’t understand.
Then he forced out, “That’s all right. I’ve been with you on every birthday since you were one. We still have decades ahead of us. I can make up for this one time.”
Stella cut in mercilessly.
“You can make up for an ordinary birthday. An independence oath ceremony only happens once. Miss it, and it’s gone.”
I had no desire to stand in the cold wind.
“My ceremony was perfect. I don’t need you to make up for anything.”
I turned to leave. Julian started to grab for me but stopped himself.
Stella stepped in front of me and tipped her head toward the corner.
“The person you should be dealing with is over there.”
Julian looked over at Iris, his expression unchanged at first.
But the instant he recognized the lavender gown she was wearing, his gaze turned to ice.
