I Was The Perfect Queen But He Forgot My Name Chapter 42

When I turned, Rowan was standing far too close.

He seemed to realize it himself. Something restrained and obsessive flickered in his eyes.

I stepped back several paces.

“You exposed an informant you worked so hard to place inside Cedar Ridge just to lure me here and tell me that?”

The staff member who had brought me up turned stark white.

Without taking his eyes off me, Rowan knocked the man unconscious with a single chop to the neck.

“I haven’t seen you in two days.”

“I only learned you existed two days ago. We are not close enough to require daily meetings.”

His expression darkened, then quickly smoothed into a smile again.

“You may only know me now. But I’ve been hidden beside Julian since I was a boy, taking knives meant for him and watching you grow up.”

He had seen me play the part of a tiny adult in public, perfectly composed. He had also seen me go home and act spoiled with my mother and with Julian.

“I always thought I hated you. So when they mistook me for Julian, I canceled the engagement immediately.”

Cedar Ridge had been Julian’s most stable political ally and knew his habits best. If Rowan’s identity ever came to light, Cedar Ridge would become his greatest threat.

“I had to cut off your support as fast as possible. Iris was just the easiest excuse.”

I asked, “Did you kill Julian?”

The smile vanished from Rowan’s face.

“Is that what you care about?”
