I Was The Perfect Queen But He Forgot My Name Chapter 53

Whenever Rowan did anything, he never settled for just one result.

The next day, a large group of councilors moved to impeach Adrian on grounds of royal scandal and abuse of privilege. King Arthur stripped him of his Royal Council observer seat and ordered him confined to his estate.

Celeste’s faction lost momentum almost immediately.

When Rowan came to see me, he was holding a new badge.

“Adrian is still useful for now. I can’t kill him yet.”

The investigation had shown that the men who attacked Martin were tied to the same force that had assassinated Julian. Rowan suspected Adrian was only being used by the true mastermind, deliberately encouraged to expand so that the Ironcliff pack behind him could be exposed.

Then he held out the badge to me.

“The original broke. I learned stone carving and made a new one.”

At the center of the smoky-violet crystal was a cedar tree, encircled by a crown. The workmanship didn’t match a master’s, but it was still astonishingly delicate.

The original craftsman had refused to duplicate something meant to be unique, so Rowan had gone and learned from another master himself.

He tried to place the badge in my hand. I stepped back.

In the end, all I said was, “Why bother?”

“The living will never outcompete the dead.”
