“Coralie, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was right there. Why didn’t you stop me? Why didn’t you tell me to stay?”

“If you’d just said you weren’t feeling well, I would have stayed.”

I almost laughed.

“I did.”

He froze.

I looked at him, enunciating each word with chilling clarity.

“Have you forgotten? Should I remind you what you said?”

“You told me not to use the baby to manipulate you. You said that was a life, too.”

I paused.

“So it’s not that I didn’t tell you. It’s that you didn’t believe me.”

Ellis opened his mouth, but no words came out.

I kept going.

“Or maybe it wasn’t that you didn’t believe me. You just wanted to go help Tessa more.”

The color drained from his face.

Just then, his phone rang.

It was Tessa.

For the first time since I’d known him, he didn’t answer her call.
