If Your Heart Doesn’t Lean Towards Me I Don’t Want It Chapter 30
“The doctor said I’m recovering well. Thanks to you taking such good care of me.”
Lucian’s eyes met mine over her head.
“That’s good news.”
At dinner, he put the best-looking fried egg on my plate and ladled a bowl of simple congee for my mother.
As I looked at the egg, I suddenly remembered that morning Ellis had cooked breakfast.
How he’d stopped me, telling me it wasn’t for me.
Lucian noticed I hadn’t touched my food. “You don’t like it?”
“No.”
I picked up my fork and took a bite.
“It’s perfect.”
So this was what it felt like to be cared for.
No guessing games required.
After dinner, I sent Lucian the first month’s rent and a payment toward the medical bills through Venmo.
When he saw the notification on his phone, his expression didn’t change.
“Got it.”
My mother looked a little disapproving.
“You’re family. Why do you have to be so formal?”
Lucian smiled.
“Auntie, if Coralie wants to pay me back, let her.”
“Every payment helps her feel more grounded.”
He understood me.
He didn’t just say the words; he was willing to respect my pace.
That night, the lawyer forwarded Ellis’s written apology.
There were no excuses, no pleas for forgiveness.
He admitted he had failed to safeguard the video, that he had enabled Tessa by sharing his accounts, and that his actions after the leak had caused me profound harm.
The last line read:
Coralie Ricci, I am sorry. I will comply with the court’s judgment and will not disturb you again.
After reading it, I saved the file and closed the folder.
Lucian asked, “Does it still hurt?”
“No.”
I shut my laptop.
“I just think he finally said the right thing.”
The apology had come far too late to change anything.
But at least it wasn’t a bargaining chip.
It was simply what a person who had done wrong was supposed to do.
I did not forgive him.
But I no longer needed to hate him to prove that I had been hurt.
