If Your Heart Doesn’t Lean Towards Me I Don’t Want It Chapter 37
Later, I learned that the right kind of love doesn’t keep you guessing.
It puts warm water in your hand. And when you say you want to walk on your own, it takes a step back and walks beside you.
Most importantly, it never takes away your right to choose.
My mother called from the other room, telling me it was time for makeup.
I answered her and set down my plate.
Lucian took my hand.
“Nervous?”
“A little.”
“If you change your mind, there’s still time.”
I raised an eyebrow at him.
“You’d let me go?”
He nodded, completely serious.
“If that was your decision, yes.”
I laced my fingers through his.
“Then I’m not changing my mind.”
When the ceremony began, my mother walked with me down the sunlit aisle.
She didn’t “give me away.”
At the end of the aisle, she simply hugged me and said, “Coralie, go forward.”
I nodded and walked toward Lucian, one step at a time.
I was not leaving one home to become part of another.
I was walking into a new life as a whole person.
When we exchanged rings, Lucian’s eyes were redder than mine.
He said softly, “Thank you for choosing me.”
I smiled and answered, “And thank you for always respecting my choice.”
As applause rose around us, I didn’t think of Ellis.
All the things I once thought I would never get past had finally been left far behind me.
