Make Them Regret It Chapter 07
Dawn came.
Finally, the men from the main house made their way down to the chapel.
They brought thermal blankets, cashmere shawls, hot soup, and a box of chocolates.
My father walked in front, still giving instructions.
“When we see Nonna, everyone apologize. Let her scold us as much as she wants.”
Colton carried a heavy cloak.
“It’s cold in there,” he said. “She was frightened last night. We can’t let her get chilled.”
The guards opened the doors.
They all stopped dead just inside the entrance.
A line was scrawled on the wall in blood. My older brother’s wife had written it with her finger.
“The federal agents came. The family is finished. The women of the Romano family will not be taken for experiments. We ended this ourselves.”
“If there is another life, I hope we are not born into a family like this again, and that we are never used by others again.”
The shawl slipped from my father’s hands.
He dropped to his knees before my grandmother, gathering her cold body into his arms.
“Mom, I came to take you home. Open your eyes and look at me…”
My older brother saw Gia curled in my arms.
He stumbled over and worked for a long time to pry her from my grasp. She was still clutching that half-eaten piece of chocolate.
