Make Them Regret It Chapter 08

The box of chocolates my older brother was carrying scattered across the floor.

My second brother knelt beside his wife. When he saw her hand covering her stomach, he seemed to understand everything at once. He coughed, and a spray of blood splattered the stone floor.

Colton stood frozen in front of me.

He recognized the wedding dress. He had chosen every pearl himself.

He crouched down, draped the cloak over my body, and lifted me into his arms.

“Blythe, stop this.”

“I don’t want your signature anymore. We’ll go back. We’ll have the ceremony right now.”

My hand dangled limply, my fingertips brushing the freezing floor.

Those three men hadn’t gotten far. They were caught and dragged back before the day was out. The leader fell to his knees and confessed everything, detailing every part Isabella had played.

But on that day, no one was paying any attention to Isabella.

The Romano family held a funeral for its women.

My coffin was placed at the far end of the hall.

On the seventh night, the last of the mourners were persuaded to go and rest. Only a single candle remained lit in the room.

Then the door creaked open.

It was Isabella.

She walked to my coffin, looked down at me, and laughed softly.

“Sister, you really picked your moment to die. Now that you’re dead, they can’t stop thinking about you.”

“But once you’re burned to ash, they’ll slowly start to forget.”

She took a lighter and a piece of oil-soaked paper from her pocket.

One spark, and not even my bones would be left.

At that moment, a powerful force yanked me downward.

My consciousness was slammed back into my cold body.

Pain.

It radiated from everywhere, as if every bone were being ground to dust.

And then I understood.

What my grandmother had given me was never a sleeping pill.

The flicker of the flame lit up Isabella’s face.

I opened my eyes.
