Make Them Regret It Chapter 10
“She’s alive! She’s possessed! She tried to kill me!”
Colton drew his gun.
He aimed it at me.
I sat in the coffin, blood from my shoulder seeping into my wedding dress. I looked at the gun and suddenly, I laughed.
“Colton,” I said, “you’re pointing a gun at me again.”
His whole body went rigid.
The gun slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor.
“Blythe…” His voice trembled. “You… you’re alive?”
I looked down at my own hands.
I remembered the way my grandmother had pressed the capsule into my palm. Her own hands had been shaking, but her eyes were clear and bright.
It had been a specially made death-mimicking drug.
Once swallowed, your breathing and pulse would become undetectable. Seven days later, the drug would wear off, and you would wake.
In that entire chapel, my grandmother had only one capsule.
She had lied to all of us.
She had lied to my mother, to both my sisters-in-law, and to me.
She only wanted me to live.
And she had lied to herself.
She had told me, “Nonna will be waiting for you,” but she knew that once she was gone, she wouldn’t be waiting for me at all.
My father staggered toward me, reaching out a hand.
“Blythe, Blythe, it’s Dad. I’m here…”
I shrank back, avoiding his touch.
“Don’t touch me.”
His hand froze in midair.
“When they died,” I asked, my voice flat and cold, “where were you?”
