There was silence on the other end for a few seconds.
Then my mother’s voice shot up.
“That’s impossible. How could Sofia do those things? She’s always been so kind, so innocent—”
My father sighed.
“Beatrice, I’m sorry. I was wrong about those things.”
“Could you… come home?”
I lowered my eyes to the half-built Lego castle on the coffee table.
Leo was lying on the rug, concentrating as he pressed a blue arch into place.
“I’m not coming back.”
“I’ve found a place here where I belong.”
“I’m doing well. I’m happy. I’m not coming back.”
I didn’t wait for them to say anything else. I hung up.
Then I crouched down and touched the back of Leo’s hand.
“Leo, want to go out to dinner with me tonight?”
He looked up at me, a trace of hesitation in his eyes.
I smiled.
“Julian’s asked me out a few times already. I can’t keep dodging him forever.”
“Will you come with me?”
Leo was quiet for a few seconds. Then he set down the block and took my hand.
