Her mother lowered her head. She didn’t cry, didn’t make excuses about Francesca’s health, didn’t ask Chiara to give way one more time.
She was just quiet for a long time, looking truly, deeply tired.
“I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I owe you too much. Francesca is going to Europe for treatment. It might be for a long time.”
“I just wanted to make this for you once. It’s not that I never thought of you. It’s that every time, I chose my other daughter first.”
After a moment of silence, Chiara picked up the bowl and took a sip.
It was hot and fragrant.
It tasted almost exactly as she had imagined it would as a child.
It had come too late. It couldn’t erase a thing.
She set the bowl down and stood.
“It’s good.”
“I hope things go well for you. Nightfall will be fine. I’m here now.”
Her mother looked up at her. In the end, she only said, “Take care of yourself.”
“I will,” Chiara said. “You too.”
She turned and walked away.
She didn’t look back.
Outside, the maple leaves were still falling.
Chiara stood on the steps for a moment before slowly making her way down.
