She Framed Me As Unfit So I’ll See Her In Court Chapter 20

I didn’t stand up.

“One last question. Did Caleb know about any of this?”

Beth instinctively shook her head, then froze under the lawyer’s stare.

“Sloan didn’t let him into the group, but she bragged to me about it.” Her fingers tightened. “She said Caleb fully supported it. Because he also thought you didn’t deserve full custody of Maya. As long as CPS left a record, he’d be able to take the child.”

My lawyer pressed at once. “Were those Sloan’s exact words?”

“Yes.”

Beth swallowed, then added in a low voice, “She threatened other parents, too. If someone wouldn’t help report you, she said she’d expose their bankruptcy records—and their husbands’—in the school group. Everyone was afraid of her.”

The lawyer turned on the recorder and had Beth repeat the entire account from the beginning. Every time, place, and exact phrase went into the statement.

This time, Caleb would never again be able to hide behind “I didn’t know anything.”

I rose and walked toward the door, then paused.

“What you did doesn’t disappear just because you say you were acting under someone else’s orders.”

Beth went white.

“But handing over your phone voluntarily and cooperating with the legal process will affect how the judge sees you. What you do next is your choice.”

I pulled the door open.

Behind me came her hoarse voice.

“Nia, I’m sorry…”

I didn’t turn around.

In my last life, people had expressed regret to me when Maya was forcibly taken away, too.

But sorry wouldn’t erase the CPS record, wouldn’t wash away my child’s fear, and wouldn’t prevent my daughter from being dragged off.
