The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 19
“Lani?”
“Meredith!”
Lani hacked at the vines while shouting at me.
“Meredith, save me!”
I raised a hand and wiped the blood from my face.
After that fight, I didn’t have much life force left.
I found a safe spot and let myself catch my breath.
My last strike had cut away half the snake-vine forest.
Now I stood on that cleared ground, my feet surrounded by severed vines.
The surviving half of the snake-vines had seen what I could do and didn’t dare approach me.
I was too tough a meal to chew.
They still had four much easier targets in front of them. Naturally, they had no interest in charging my way.
High-level magical beasts had brains.
Snake-vines were especially calculating.
Looking at the writhing vines in the distance, I sighed inwardly.
The true Mother of the Snake-vines was hidden deep underground.
She rarely exposed herself.
The snake-vines on the surface were just parts of her body.
And not even important parts.
You could cut them down all you liked—it wouldn’t touch her core.
Once she had devoured all the living prey nearby, she would fall asleep underground again and wait for new prey to wander in.
