The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 24

By the time I had fully absorbed the power of the light-shadow twin lotus, ten days had passed.

Lani and the others had long since vanished.

The Mother of the Snake-vines, on the other hand, hadn’t moved at all.

She knew perfectly well that Paloma and I were right above her, yet she didn’t dare touch us.

She stayed quiet beneath the earth, pretending she had no idea anyone was there.

Paloma was finally full.

It was the first time I had ever seen her full.

She collapsed against me and immediately shut her eyes.

Holding her, I gasped for air and nearly cried.

I had truly thought I wouldn’t survive.

Thank the heavens.

She was finally full.

I had actually lived through it.

I hugged her tightly and muttered under my breath, “Eat your fill and go to sleep—you’re a pig, aren’t you…”

She slept deeply, as if she hadn’t heard.

I reached out a finger and poked her cheek.

“All you ever do is eat. Only pigs are like that…”

“Meredith, I can’t be bothered to deal with you, but don’t push it.”

Still with her eyes closed, she suddenly spoke.

My whole body jolted.

“You’re not asleep?”

“I’m not a pig. Why would being full mean I have to sleep?”

“…”

“Then what are you doing now?”

“I’m full. I’m resting.”

“…”

I sat there holding her for a while, then couldn’t help asking,

“Have you ever been full before?”
