The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 08
Hadrian bought a ticket for the next flight back to New York.
There was no first class. Only a middle seat in economy on a red-eye.
Leo tried to stop him.
“You’re already here. Mireille is just waiting for you to go back to her, right? If you leave now, you’re giving her exactly what she wants.”
“She moved out.”
“Where could she have gone? Sarah’s?”
Hadrian didn’t answer.
My parents had died young. After Sarah got married, I didn’t really have a home in New York to go back to.
And the Bellini family had never truly given me a place, either.
He used to know that.
But over time, he’d gotten used to calling the place he lived “our home” and had forgotten that neither the apartment nor the Family belonged to me.
During the flight, he stared at his phone the entire time.
I didn’t answer.
When he got back to the apartment, the living room looked exactly as it had when he left. The unopened registration paperwork still sat on the dining table.
The copy of my driver’s license was gone.
The bathroom was missing one toothbrush. The shoe cabinet was half-empty.
In the kitchen, the mug I always used was gone, too. Only his remained, with a small chip on the rim.
He pulled open the bedroom drawer.
The tin keepsake box was gone.
It had held every ticket he had ever mailed me over the years.
Hadrian sat down on the edge of the bed and stayed there until dark.
He called me. The line connected, rang once, and I hung up.
When he called again, it went straight to voicemail.
