The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 09

Three days later, he cornered my editor-in-chief in the lobby of my old office building.

“How long is Mireille on leave?”

My editor-in-chief looked him over.

Hadrian was dressed in a black three-piece suit, his right hand bearing the ring that marked him as the Bellini family’s underboss.

“She’s not on leave. She transferred.”

“Transferred where?”

“That’s confidential employee information. I can’t tell you.”

Hadrian braced a hand against the reception desk.

“I’m her fiancé.”

“In Mireille’s file, her status is now listed as single. She changed her emergency contact, too.”

“To who?”

“Cameron Hale, executive editor at the Austin bureau.”

Hadrian’s fingers tightened on the desk.

The editor-in-chief pushed Hadrian’s business card back toward him.

“Mr. Bellini, before she left, Mireille said that if you came asking, I was to pass along one message.”

“What message?”

“She’s not waiting for you to smooth things over.”

The Austin project moved fast.

Cameron took me to see old stations along the railway line.

Passing a post office, I bought a stamp.

He noticed the old envelope in my hand.

“Mailing something?”

“Haven’t decided yet.”

“Figure out the address first. If it goes to the wrong place, getting it sent back is even more trouble.”

I smiled and slipped the envelope into my bag.

That night, Hadrian called from an unfamiliar number.

“You’re in Austin?”
