The Underboss Voted No So I Chose A New Life Chapter 10
“Yes.”
“Give me the address.”
“What for?”
My tone seemed to catch him off guard.
When I used to answer his calls, the first thing I always asked was whether he’d eaten.
Now all I said was two words.
*What for?*
“Mireille, don’t transfer to a new city because of a fight. You barely know anyone there. What if something happens?”
“I have coworkers.”
“That Cameron guy?”
“That’s none of your business.”
The line went quiet for a few seconds.
“I’m coming to get you tomorrow.”
“Hadrian, we broke up.”
“I didn’t agree to it.”
Even now, his voice held the authority of the underboss, the one who decided who could enter and who had to leave.
“A breakup doesn’t need a Family vote.”
I hung up.
Before the screen went dark, he sent me a screenshot of a return flight confirmation.
Austin to New York.
Two seats.
He still thought that if he bought the tickets, I would come back with him.
…
Hadrian arrived in Austin the next afternoon.
I was interviewing a retired station attendant at an old depot. When I came out, he was standing at the bottom of the steps.
Two men in black suits waited at a distance, not approaching.
Hadrian looked like he hadn’t slept in days. There were shadows under his eyes, and his shirt was wrinkled.
But when he saw me, the first thing he did was hold out a hot latte.
“Your stomach acts up. Don’t go without eating.”
I didn’t take it.
He set the coffee on the stone railing beside us.
“The flight is at seven tonight. If you have too much stuff, I can have it shipped back.”
