The Underboss’s Doormat Wife Is The Don’s Queen Chapter 09

The Mastermind

The lawyer looks down at the stack of records.

“You gathered all of this in one day? As the surviving spouse, you certainly have grounds to pursue the claim.”

“He never hid anything from me,” I say.

The lawyer opens his mouth, then thinks better of it.

Whenever Dante bought something for Mia, he paid through our joint accounts.

I kept a record of every transaction.

My phone vibrates.

Messages from Dante’s associates fill the screen.

[Sorry. We took the joke too far. Don’t take it personally.]

[Dante and Mia were just messing around. He always said you were the only woman he’d ever marry.]

[When’s the memorial? We want to come pay our respects.]

I delete every contact.

Then I call the funeral home.

“There won’t be a memorial service. I won’t be claiming the ashes either. I’ll sign whatever release you need this afternoon.”

I eat lunch, then go to the funeral home and sign the papers.

When I get back home, Mia is standing at my front door.

Her hair is a mess.

She’s wearing nothing but a plain T-shirt and jeans.

“Dante is dead. Happy now?” Mia says.

I don’t answer.

“You were his wife. He supported you for years. Even when we were together, he never planned to leave you.”

My eyes drop to Mia’s hand.

She’s gripping her phone tightly.

The screen is lit.

She’s recording me.

I raise my voice.

“If he treated me so well, why did you get him killed?”

“If you hadn’t dragged him to that hotel room, Victor never would’ve caught you together. You knew what your husband was like. Why didn’t you think about that before sleeping with Dante?”

Mia goes silent.

I step forward, grab her wrist, and turn the phone toward us.

Then I lean close to her ear.

“I’ve known about you and Dante from the beginning.”
