Mia starts trembling.
“What did you just say? You did this on purpose. I’m calling the cops.”
I let go of her wrist and unlock my front door.
“The police stay out of Syndicate business. Pay back every dollar Dante spent on you. My lawyer will be in touch.”
I walk inside and shut the door.
Mia screams from the other side.
“You’ll get what’s coming to you!”
I clean the house and throw every last thing Dante owned into the trash.
My phone rings.
It’s Mia again.
“Where the hell am I supposed to get $3.52 million? Dante gave me those things willingly!”
I hold the phone away from my ear until she finishes screaming.
“I have the right to recover our marital assets.”
“He’s dead! You inherited everything he had. Isn’t that enough for you?”
I look around the empty room.
“You were with him for money too. Now he’s dead because your husband caught the two of you together. I’ll turn over everything I have to Lorenzo.”
“You’re insane!”
Mia hangs up.
I list the house for sale and buy myself a new apartment. Then I hire a contractor to renovate it from top to bottom.
Six months later, Lorenzo calls a Syndicate tribunal.
Dante violated the brotherhood code by sleeping with the wife of one of his own men. Victor attacked him after discovering the betrayal.
Lorenzo spares Victor’s life.
I ask Lorenzo for one favor.
Victor is sentenced to ten years in the Syndicate’s underground prison.
Mia calls me the moment she hears.
“How is that possible? He killed the Underboss! Lorenzo should have had him executed!”
“I spoke to Lorenzo. He gave me what I asked for.”
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?! The second Victor gets out, he’s coming for me!”
I end the call.
Mia can’t repay what she owes me.
Lorenzo’s men freeze her accounts and take her passport.
She can’t leave the city.
All she can do is wait for Victor to get out.
Victor sends Mia letter after letter from the underground prison.
I send Victor one letter of my own.
Inside the envelope are Dante and Mia’s chat logs.
Eight years later, Lorenzo lets Victor out early.
The first thing Victor does is go looking for Mia.
Later, I receive a cleanup report from Lorenzo’s men.
I don’t open it twice.
I feed the file into the shredder.
