The Unsent Appeal Chapter 08
Kieran had been on track for another promotion.
But because he had helped Allison move and edit her résumé, he’d missed a critical project deadline and made several mistakes at work.
He had told his parents about it, hoping his father could use his industry experience to help him find a solution.
They’d had a serious talk with him.
His father said, “You can like whoever you want.”
“But you can’t destroy your professional reputation over a pretty face.”
So Kieran decided that once he finished the résumé, he would cut back on his contact with Allison.
The more time he spent with her, the more he realized she had little to offer besides her looks.
She had a terrible temper.
Kieran had only mentioned in passing that I could run a half-marathon, and Allison had dug her long nails into his arm.
She warned him that if he ever praised me in front of her again, he could stop coming around.
Kieran had apologized profusely and taken her to expensive restaurants for a week straight before she finally forgave him.
Allison couldn’t even heat milk or fry an egg.
She had promised to cook dinner for him, then served blackened eggs and a steak so tough it was impossible to cut.
The milk had boiled over and burned to the bottom of the pot.
Kieran had spent the whole night with a stomachache.
He felt like he’d been completely fooled by her looks.
He started thinking of me instead.
I could put together a delicious dinner in an hour, and my steak sauce was almost restaurant-quality.
Kieran had always believed that of the two sisters, I was the one he would ultimately marry.
Before, he had felt my career prospects didn’t measure up to his.
He worried his parents would think our educational backgrounds and social circles weren’t a good enough match.
Now, I had proven I had what it took to keep climbing the corporate ladder.
In his mind, the last obstacle had vanished.
He was so excited he wanted to fly to Dublin immediately and propose.
But no matter how many times he called me, I never answered.
