Tell Me the Truth
Lily bursts into tears.
“Brother! Father! Mother! Help me!”
She struggles in my grip.
“I don’t know what happened to Sera! I swear it has nothing to do with me!”
Then she looks at Kael.
“Besides, Sera has lied about things like this before. How do we even know she’s really dead?”
Helena finally snaps out of her shock.
She rushes over and pulls Lily behind her.
“I don’t believe Sera is dead either.”
Her voice isn’t as strong as before, but she still shields Lily with her body.
“You can’t use this to hurt Lily.”
Her eyes keep moving past me.
Past Kael.
Toward the doors.
As if she is certain Sera is hiding somewhere, waiting to jump out and prove this is another trick.
“If Sera still wants us as her parents,” Helena says, “tell her to come out and apologize to Lily.”
“We’ll let everything go.”
“We won’t punish her for what happened today.”
Gavin nods.
“Exactly.”
Derek wipes the blood from his mouth.
“If she admits she was wrong, she’s still part of this Pack.”
“But if she keeps lying and causing trouble, then she can forget about being a Blackwood.”
I stare at them.
Then I laugh.
“You really are unbelievable.”
They glare at me.
“You can trust an adopted daughter without question.”
I point at Lily.
“You protect her before you even know what happened.”
“Did any of you ever trust Sera like that?”
Silence.
Helena opens her mouth.
Nothing comes out.
Gavin looks away.
Derek’s jaw tightens, but he has no answer either.
The guests understand.
One male shakes his head.
“They lost their biological daughter for eighteen years, finally got her back, and still chose the adopted one every time.”
A she-wolf beside him scoffs.
“No one said they had to stop loving Lily.”
“They could’ve treated both daughters fairly.”
“Instead, they sent their own blood into the Pit for her.”
Another guest looks at the white sheet in Kael’s arms.
“And now Sera might be dead because of it.”
The Blackwoods’ faces turn pale.
For the first time, none of them argues.
Helena’s arms slowly loosen around Lily.
Gavin takes half a step away.
Even Derek looks uncertain.
Lily notices.
The color drains from her face.
Maybe the Blackwoods are finally starting to wonder if they were wrong.
Maybe they even feel guilty.
I don’t care.
Sera came back to them hoping to find the family she lost.
They answered that hope by throwing her into the Pit.
Now she lies motionless in her brother’s arms.
Their regret means nothing to me.
“Rosalie.”
She nods.
Soon, every servant, maid, guard, and attendant in the Blackwood Pack House is brought into the hall.
They stand in a nervous line.
I sit in the Alpha’s chair and look at them one by one.
“You’re here for one reason.”
“The Blackwoods claim Sera repeatedly hurt Lily.”
“I want the truth.”
The staff exchange uneasy looks.
“For every truthful statement, I’ll pay one hundred gold coins.”
Several heads snap up.
“And I’ll make sure you have another position after you leave Blackwood Pack.”
Their fear begins to shift.
Then I add, “But if I catch anyone lying…”
I let the silence stretch.
“You’ll end up in an unmarked grave.”
No one moves.
These people may be invisible to the Alpha family.
But servants see everything.
Every fight.
Every accusation.
Every lie.
If I want to know what Sera went through here, they are the ones who can tell me.
Still, they hesitate.
One of the guests finally speaks.
“Don’t be afraid.”
“That’s Royal Commander Hart and his mother.”
“If she says she’ll protect you, she will.”
Another guest nods.
“Tell the truth.”
“No one in Blackwood Pack can touch you now.”
Derek’s fingers curl into fists.
Then he speaks.
“Go ahead.”
His voice is hoarse.
“If it’s the truth, I won’t call it betrayal.”
My eyes move to Lily.
Whatever color is left in her face disappears.
Her hands start to shake.
For the first time since I arrived, she looks truly terrified.
