They Canceled My Ticket I Canceled Them Chapter 09
“Marcus… there’s something on the table.”
Marcus strode over.
Two envelopes lay on the polished wood.
He opened the breakup notice first.
My signature was clear and firm. My lawyer’s contact information was listed on the final page.
Inside the second envelope were the notarized documents revoking every legal authority.
“This is impossible.”
Marcus gripped the letter, the veins standing out on the back of his hand.
“She thinks she can end ten years between us with one letter?”
Daniel picked up the revocation forms, the color draining from his face.
“She removed Tyler and me from everything. Medical decisions, emergency contact, financial power of attorney—it’s all gone.”
Tyler snatched the pages from him, his eyes finding the date. His voice changed.
“This was notarized two weeks ago. She was planning to leave before we even talked about Labor Day.”
Two weeks ago was exactly when Madison had returned to Chicago and moved into Daniel’s house. It was also when Marcus had started missing our anniversaries, always claiming he had to work late.
Marcus stared at the keys and key card on the table, his breathing growing ragged.
“Find her. Call her right now.”
He grabbed Madison’s phone and dialed my number.
It went straight to voicemail.
Daniel and Tyler started calling, too, reaching out to mutual friends.
The answers were all the same.
“Elena hasn’t contacted me.”
“She quit her job. Put in her resignation last week, didn’t you know?”
Marcus sank onto the sofa.
Madison’s blanket, her snacks, her slippers—they were still strewn around the apartment. For the first time, he truly saw how much space another woman had taken up in our home.
I wasn’t waiting for him to come and coax me back.
I had really left.
