When I discovered my husband had taken Brooke and Sadie and left early, leaving our daughter at home, my first move wasn’t to confront him.
It was to save the Ring doorbell footage.
Lies can be changed.
Timestamps can’t.
Three hours earlier, I was still out of state.
An alert from our Ring doorbell popped up on my phone, and I watched Evan wheel two suitcases out of the house. The mother and daughter from the soccer team he coached were already waiting by our SUV.
He loaded the luggage into the trunk.
Brooke got in the passenger side.
Sadie climbed in the back.
Then he drove away.
At that point, there were still three hours until the citywide mandatory evacuation took effect.
Maisie was nowhere in the frame.
And Evan never told me he’d left her home alone.
Three hours later, a video call came through from Maisie’s tablet.
She was standing on the dining room table.
Water already filled the living room, covering the first step of the staircase.
Her hands were shaking so badly she could barely hold the device steady.
She wasn’t sobbing.
She just stared at me, her voice small.
“Mom, the water’s coming in.”
“Dad’s still not back.”
I kept my voice steady, praying she couldn’t hear how close I was to breaking.
I didn’t end the call.
With my free hand, I dialed 911, rattled off our address, and told the dispatcher there was a seven-year-old child trapped inside.
Every minute meant the water was rising higher.
And Maisie was still waiting for her father to come back for her.
But the doorbell footage had already shown me where Evan had gone.
He had the car.
He had the time.
He had even packed their suitcases.
This wasn’t some last-minute rescue.
It wasn’t that he didn’t have time to come back.
At the very least, he knew when he drove away that his daughter wasn’t in the car.
The second I hung up with 911, I opened my laptop.
I didn’t call Evan.
I didn’t give him a chance to delete a thing.
I downloaded the doorbell footage.
Then I pulled up the smart lock records from the last three months.
I saved every file to my hard drive and uploaded a second copy of everything to the cloud.
The doorbell footage proved who he left with.
The lock records proved he never came back.
And the video from Maisie, standing in the flood, proved who he left behind.
After the last file finished uploading, I looked back at my phone screen.
Maisie was still on that table, waiting for him.
In that moment, all I wanted was for her to survive.
If she made it out of that house alive, I would take all this evidence and demand Evan answer one question:
When you left three hours early with another family, why wasn’t there room for your own daughter?
