The day my husband secretly moved his childhood sweetheart into the new house we were supposed to share, I didn’t throw her out.
I just packed my bags.
That seaside villa had been his promise to me—a fresh start for our tenth anniversary.
I had chosen every window, every light fixture, myself.
But just as I was about to move in, he finally called.
“She just got divorced,” he’d said. “She has nowhere to stay.”
“I’m letting her stay there temporarily. Six weeks.”
“Be kind, Nora. Don’t make this humiliating for her.”
He said it so casually.
As if he hadn’t just given away our home.
As if I, his wife, were the one who didn’t belong.
“Why didn’t you tell me beforehand?” I asked.
He paused.
“I knew you’d agree.”
“Don’t make this ugly over something so small.”
I looked up at the second floor.
His childhood sweetheart was standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master bedroom, dressed in expensive loungewear.
Behind her were the curtains and furniture I had picked out.
Beneath her feet was a house engraved with my husband’s and my initials.
And yet I was the one locked out of our new life.
Suddenly, I laughed.
This wasn’t a request for my permission.
It was a notification that my place had already been given to someone else.
I called him back.
“I understand.”
He probably thought those two words meant I would compromise.
But the moment the call ended, I texted my lawyer.
“Pull everything on our joint accounts since the marriage.”
“Start with this house.”
I wanted to know exactly when he had started treating our home as if it were hers.
