Early the next morning, Graham’s patience snapped. He called the head of a tech company he and Mara had jointly invested in.
“Has Mara contacted you?”
The man hesitated. “Her assistant has taken over her duties on the project. Delivery won’t be affected. As for her personally… I’m not at liberty to say.”
Graham relaxed slightly.
If she was still handling work, then she hadn’t really left.
He next called the charity fund he financed and Mara managed.
“She resigned from all positions last night. All handover paperwork has been signed and filed.”
Graham’s face darkened. He immediately dialed Mara’s personal assistant.
“Put her on the phone.”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Whitmore. Her affairs have been transferred to her legal counsel.”
The call was then redirected to an unfamiliar law firm.
A cool female voice came on the line. “Ms. Mara Reyes has revoked your spousal medical proxy, canceled all authorizations on joint bank accounts, and withdrawn from all shared business ventures.”
Graham shot to his feet. “Put her on. I want to hear it from her.”
“My client is refusing all direct communication. Please do not attempt to locate her through assistants, friends, or business associates again.”
He gripped the phone so tightly his knuckles ached, and for the first time, raw panic clawed at his chest.
The lawyer gave him no chance to argue.
“Mr. Whitmore, from this moment forward, all matters concerning Ms. Reyes will be handled exclusively through my office.”
