That year, Maya had already booked a flight to Chicago to look at apartments. He had thrown that line at her, cold and final.
The next day, she canceled the trip.
He had always thought what she couldn’t give up was the comfort of the Holloway lifestyle.
Only now did he realize what she had really given up was her own future.
Grant slammed the tablet down on the table.
“Who here knew about this?”
No one answered. A few people looked down, avoiding his gaze.
Celeste clicked her tongue. “That was her choice. Giving up a career for love is perfectly normal. You can’t blame other people for that.”
“For love?”
Grant stared at her.
“Or because someone kept whispering in my ear?”
Celeste’s expression shifted.
“The first deferral—who was it that told me Maya was only using Lucy as an excuse? That she wanted to move into my house as soon as possible and secure her position?”
“I was just telling you to be careful.”
“But Lucy’s therapist had already said that having Maya there was helping her.”
Grant took a step closer.
“Were you protecting Lucy—or were you afraid Maya would actually stay?”
